According to photographer Wesley Billingslea, many "lost cultures" have much in common - from the economic survival of their people, whose lives are often filled with racism and endless human rights challenges, to the attempts to keep their own ancient traditions alive. Lost Cultures: The Aztecs, the first in a series of books, will finally reveal the truth about one of the most prolific and often misunderstood civilizations in history and how, despite beliefs to the contrary, its people live on today.
From human sacrifices to the Spanish conquest, one of the first known acts of genocide, this book will provide a truthful and unflinching view of the Aztecs' real history, not an account contrived by outsiders. "The Lost Cultures series is a true collaboration with direct participation from the subjects," Wesley explains. "I am an enabler for their voice, history & truth."
In the Lost Cultures series, readers will hear first hand the personal stories and struggles from different cultures who have either been forgotten or misunderstood. "Being part of this real collaboration offers personal insight into their human condition, everyday life, strength and independence," he says. "The book offers personal stories of their spirit and often times tragedies of their human rights. These collaborations also offer a cultural educational experience."
The results of Wesley's experiences can raise cultural sensitivity through awareness and education as well as help people gain a deeper and more personal insight to the thoughts, feelings and ideas of other cultures.. "By having awareness to cultural diversity, we can teach our children to become better adults & accept differences in people," he says.
Wesley is currently working in Book 2, forthcoming first quarter of 2008, The Lost Cultures: The Aztec Photos. Other books & photo exhibits will include The Undocumented (focus on illegal immigration), the Huicholes, Farming & Farm Workers, Homeless and the Apache. His hobbies include black/white photography, human rights activist & ancient cultures.
