In the October Author Spotlight:
Cal Byers, author of
Esteva and Last Breath

Cal Byers was born in North Carolina. After college, with a degree in art, he became the creative art director for his own agency for twenty-six years. Being responsible for hundreds of advertising campaigns from conception to print, he became proficient, not only with the visual effect of printed material, but also with the written word. Over the years he has written countless magazine articles, newspaper articles and brochures throughout the southeast.

In 1990, Cal published a successful series of children's books, which he wrote and illustrated. More recently, he published Esteva and Last Breath, both fiction novels. "Creating characters and working in color illustrations are very time consuming but at the same time very fulfilling. In writing novels, I paint those colorful paintings with my words," he says.

Esteva was a big success in the Caribbean where he has lived for over a decade. Much of his inspiration comes from the beauty of the islands and the colorful people who reside there but at the same time, his studio in the mountains of North Carolina is also great place to
work. "As an author, I can write anywhere," he says. "The book is always in my mind."

Cal is also well known in the islands for his watercolor paintings where he exhibits his paintings in galleries, resorts, and art shows. "He finds that painting and writing are actually quite similar. "At an art show, I'm putting myself out there for the public to enjoy or criticize. When a novel is complete, the reader approves or disapproves. I strive to create a product in art or books that I can be proud of and at the same time be enjoyed by others," he explains.

His next novel, Track Down, is a sequel to Last Breath and will be available in late fall. He is also has outlines for eight more novels. "Over my lifetime I have acquired a collection of characters and story lines to complete. There's a saying that there is a book in everyone. I just happen to have a few more," he laughs. Presently he lives in North Carolina and the Bahamas. When not writing, he enjoys snorkeling, exploring, traveling, hiking and nature in general.
