Al "Hoagy" Carmichael
Author of 106 Yards

Over a period of years, friends and fans of Al "Hoagy" Carmichael have repeatedly asked him to put his life in writing. In his new book 106 Yards, Al puts his experiences - in pro football, Hollywood, the Marines, and in life - down in print for the world to enjoy.

"When I look back, I consider myself very fortunate. Like a lot of people during the 1930s, our family struggles. That struggle only became greater when I was a teenager because of the death of my father," Al says. "From those humble beginnings I went on to build successful careers in professional football and motion pictures."

Born in 1928 in Boston, Massachusetts, Al was a collegiate and professional football player. He played college football at the University of Southern California, and the Santa Ana Jr. College. In 1953, he was drafted in Round One by the Green Bay Packers. He played professionally for the them from 1953-1958 and then the Denver Broncos of the American Football League in 1960 and 1961. Al has held many records and honors, such as scoring the first touchdown in the first American Football League football game. He is also a member of the Parkers Hall of Fame.

His acting credits include being an extra in the classic Stanley Kubrick film "Spartacus". He was also slated to appear with Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin in "Something's Got to Give" however, problems with production and the death of Marilyn kept the film from being completed.

106 Yards is a journey throughout Al's life and his two careers - football and acting. "This story will take readers behind the scenes during the glory years of professional football and the movie and television industry," he explains. "Those travels brought me into contact with some of the greats in each business. I hope you have as much fun reading about my life as I have had living it."
