Richard Chamberlain,
author of The Cookbook for Men Who Must
With today's working mothers and single parent homes, more and more men are responsible for the family meals. In his book, The Cookbook for Men Who Must, Richard Chamberlain shares his 40 years of cooking experience, using simple recipes and few ingredients.
Growing up the oldest of four children, it often fell on Richard to prepare the family meals. "My mother worked in an S&H Green Stamps store and often did not get home until late. My father—God rest his soul—could not boil water without burning it," he laughs. "My grandmother had arthritis and was in a wheelchair, so when she lived with us, I would often be her hands while preparing meals."
Richard continued to cook after he had his own family. One Christmas, after being persuaded by his daughters, he put together a book of all his recipes and gave it to both. This became the basis for The Cookbook for Men Who Must. "The recipes are very simple because work gets too complicated for most people. A simple recipe that does not require a lot of deep thought can make all the difference," he says.
This book is intended for anyone who finds themselves in the position of needing to cook. It takes the user through some basic meal planning as well as having almost 100 dishes that are easy to prepare and taste great. "Men, with the recipes in this cookbook, with relatively little effort you will be able to prepare some basic meals and snacks for yourself, for your family, for your buddies, or at least, to impress a date. There's nothing really fancy in here—just good food that everybody likes," he says.
Richard lives in Centreville, VA (near Washington, DC) with two "foster cats" where he works as a management consultant for a pharmaceutical company. In addition to two daughters, he has 2 son-in-laws (both of which can cook) and 5 grandchildren. When not cooking or entertaining, he enjoys watching sports on his 110 inch projection television and assembling models. He is also working on his next book, Entertaining Outdoors for the Man Who Must, which will contain tips and recipes for the perfect outdoor get together.
