It all began with a dinner party among friends. Long time diver, and locally recognized underwater videographer and photographer David Cowan showed a preview from one of his custom undersea films to a friend. The beauty and tranquility of the underwater scenes struck her so, that she requested a video to be made that she could play on her television set. It seemed silly to have a blank box staring at her all day long, when she could sit back and relax in front of an amazing array of marine life instead, or enjoy the comfort of having it playing in the background, the soothing music lifting and relaxing her spirits. The Digital Aquarium Series was born.
The Digital Aquarium can be used as for pure entertainment, as a relaxation tool or a therapeutic devise for people with disabilities such as dementia, Alzheimer's and autism. "The largest stressor among people with Alzheimer's is trying to follow normal television programming," Cowan says. "With the Digital Aquarium videos, there is no story to follow. It's pure entertainment." Homebound or bedridden individuals can also benefit from the soothing music and vivid undersea images.
David has been diving since 1990 and has become an expert diver and underwater videographer. He has collected his undersea footage of
the beautiful marine life just off the coast of Palm Beach County, Florida. "Operating a camera underwater entails a great number of challenges, not the least of which is holding the camera steady with nothing to support you," David says.
When not diving, he enjoys hiking and photography. He's also developing two new videos to be released later this fall. The first includes new spectacular underwater video scenes enhanced with identification panels for over one hundred fish and reef creatures. The second is an inspirational video of underwater scenery with Bible quotes set to Christian music.
