Douglas Elwell, author of Mysterious World: IrelandDoug Elwell started Mysterious World in 1998 in order to develop the previously unexplored “mysterious travel” niche of the travel industry. Mysterious World has since emerged as the leader in the now-growing field of mysterious travel, with many imitators but no equals. Mysterious World: Ireland is the first book in the Mysterious World Travel Guides series, and his first book.
Three years ago, Elwell was contacted by travel writer Ian Middleton to create a series of articles on travel. From that idea, Mysterious World: Ireland was born. "Mysterious World: Ireland represents the next generation of travel guides, Elwell explains. The book is divided into three sections, The Mystery, The History and The Journey. Starting with The Mystery, you will delve deep into Ireland's legendary past, and the mysterious people who invaded Ireland time and time again in search of their destinies. In The History, you will discover Ireland's known history up to the present day, and receive a thorough understanding of what it is to be Irish. Finally, in The Journey, you will be taken along one man's journey throughout all the four ancient provinces of Ireland on a quest to rediscover mysterious Ireland.
Doug earned masters degrees in both Old Testament Biblical Studies/Ancient Near Eastern History and Marketing Communications, and has worked in the fields of graphic design, web design and publishing since 1993. He used his research abilities to concentrate on the first two sections of Mysterious World: Ireland. "I wrote 45% of the book, with my writing partner Ian Middleton writing the other 55%," he says. "Ian had been to Ireland before and went to visit again in order to write The Journey."
Though Mysterious World: Ireland covers the mystery and history of Ireland, it is still essentially a travel journal. "Our travel guides are not merely dispassionate listings of sights to see, places to eat, and so forth, but also include a great deal of useful travel information. They will be more like a form of travel journal in that they will include not only useful travel information, but also the personal story of one man’s journey throughout each country, written in a language and terminology that is readable and interesting to any reader, from the hard-core adventurer to the armchair traveler," he says.
