Foreword by Judge Griffin B. Bell,
Former U.S. Attorney General

Author Angie MorrisAngie Epting Morris is the daughter of attorney Eugene A. Epting of Athens, Georgia. From her years growing up, she remembers her father’s stories about estate settlements and his advice on how to avoid family conflict in these situations. When both of her parents died in 1993, she, along with her two sisters and her brother – faced the task of settling the estate. By putting to use the advice of their father, they were able to accomplish this with remarkable success. "After giving this information to many people I realized how much it helped in ‘keeping peace in a family' and preventing conflict during an estate settlement process", Angie says. A few years later, this advice became her new book, The Settlement Game: How to Settle an Estate Peacefully and Fairly.

"The Settlement Game was really inspired by my Daddy," she says. "These were his teachings throughout our lives. As people would ask for clarifications about certain things, the document grew." A dear friend who had used it then suggested that she combine all her knowledge into a book. "As I began to research it, I realized that although there are thousands of things on the market related to the ABC's of how to “settle” an estate – and many legalistic types of documents, and even many offers from people who will help sell real estate, etc. I could never find anything that instructed one on “How to divide up the furniture and personal property in an estate,” Angie says. She then began to attempt to get her notes and thoughts down into a form for publishing. After her husband's mother passed away in 2003, he asked Angie to print out the “rough draft” of her book to give to his brothers and sister for them to use in dividing all the household goods, etc. "I wrote the book because my husband gave me the confidence to offer this information to the world," she smiles.

Angie graduated from the University of Georgia in 1968 with a B.S. degree in geography and majored in cartography (i.e., map making). This led to employment as a professional cartographer for the Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., in 1969. There she met Carter Morris, a young Naval Officer who was serving as a White House military social aide. They were married in 1972, and made their home in Evans, Georgia, outside of Augusta. The couple raised two sons, Hunter and Taylor, now grown. Carter became a high school teacher and coach. Angie taught high school English and geography for three years before opening a retail travel agency in Augusta. She also eventually opened a state accredited travel school to train travel industry personnel, which she operated simultaneously with the agency.

Angie continues to work in the travel industry. She also enjoys fly fishing and spending time with her husband and sons.

"In The Settlement Game, Angie Epting Morris makes a vital contribution to America’s families. So many hurts happen in the aftermath of grief that damaging conflict over possessions should be avoided. This book is a down to earth conversation based on experience as well as observation about how to prepare for working constructively through the decisions to be made about division of possessions. Preparing beforehand avoids regretting afterwards."
