Darden North, MD,
Author of House Call

Darden North, MD, has always had an interest in publication. "There's something thrilling about seeing a book or something you put together once it's put out," he explains. In his new book House Call, he captures the human side of how doctors may think.

Darden began his writing journey in college. "When I was a senior at Ole Miss, I was editor-in-chief of the yearbook, which was a pretty big production there and I also did the yearbook my senior year in medical school," he says. Now a practicing obstetrician/gynecologist in Jackson, Mississippi, Darden brings his medical background to all his books. "I wanted to capture a tale that brought in examples of the very strong personalities that we see in medicine," he says.

House CallHouse Call started as a list of characters and three years later the story was complete. "It was sort of hard to get going with it, but once I got the plot down in mind and the subplots going, it came together," Darden says. It then took another year to tweak and edit his manuscript. "I wanted House Call to be good enough for people to want the book." Darden has achieved just that. The Clarion Ledger says that North "writes about what he knows best and captures the hectic, stress filled environment (of medicine) driven by drama" adding that House Call is "your new beach read." The Journal of the Mississippi State Medical Association states that the extraordinary and accurate descriptions in the prose make the medical thriller realistic and that "North's skill as a writer alone is not what makes the novel live (but also) his background, his daily grind as a physician, his first-hand knowledge of the inner workings and bizarre dynamics (of medicine).

Darden has already completed his second novel, Points of Origin, and is in the process of editing it now. He plans to release Points of Origin in hardcover in late October 2006. He continues to do local book signings and has a third book in the works. "I'm trying to do a book a year, but I'm kind of behind right now. I may have written a page or two, but that's about it," he says.

Born in Jackson and reared in Cleveland, Mississippi, Darden and his wife Sally are active community members and have a son William, who's applying to medical school, and a daughter Anderson, who is pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. The family continues to reside in Jackson with a cat and three dogs. When not writing or working, Darden enjoys working in the yard, gardening, game hunting with his son and spending time with his wife and daughter. He doesn't plan on giving up his practice any time soon. "I still go to work every day, delivering babies and taking care of surgery patients, and I'm not about to give that up," he says.
