Dennis Trittin, Author of
What I Wish I Knew at 18

Dennis Trittin never set out to write a book. “Two weeks before our son Michael left for college, I had a ‘dad moment.’ I began asking whether I had taught him everything to prepare him well for adulthood, his upcoming transition, and for life itself,” Dennis says. “It’s a very reflective time, where as a parent, you start judging yourself—how well did you do? Did you cover all the bases? Did you prepare them well for the key life decisions ahead?”

Dennis began to develop a list of what he called “Life Success Pointers” that were based on the qualities and methods of the honorable leaders he’d met along his life journey. They, too, were principles that served him well in life. “Because of my past involvement in the corporate world, as well as the faith and educational communities, I’ve been surrounded by amazing leaders that have taught me so much.” He felt inspired to share this wisdom with Michael.

As he pondered his list, Dennis realized it was more than just advice to his son. “I knew I wasn’t the only parent going through this same milestone and self-assessment. I also considered the many conversations with parents whose children suffered mightily after high school as well as the comments from business leaders who are concerned about the lack of life skills among many young adults today. Perhaps my list was meant to be a book that shares a vision for a successful life?”

He sent his list to friends who were parents, educators, faith leaders, and business leaders and they all agreed that this was a much-needed book in the making—both for young people and all the adults who guide them. Dennis then traveled to his family’s condo in Wisconsin to finalize and structure his list. Throughout the writing of this book, Dennis prayed for guidance in both subject matter and tone. “I am struck by how my life has been a preparation for this work,” he shares.

What I Wish I Knew at 18: Life Lessons for the Road Ahead is filled with practical, before-the-fact wisdom based on the principles of honorable leaders. Written in a conversational style, the book serves as a life coach, not a lecture, for young adults as well as a leader’s guide for all who mentor them along their journey. “At the beginning, I was so focused on my book being for teens and young adults, but I found out from readers that my target market is much broader. This is an excellent and practical guide for parents, educators, faith leaders, and mentors as they prepare children to flourish in adulthood.” It is also the core of a new leadership and life skills curriculum for educators and service organizations.

Dennis is currently retired from the investment industry, but has begun a second career volunteering with youth and teaching Financial Literacy courses to students and adults in the greater Gig Harbor, Washington area. He has served as Board Chair for Lighthouse Christian School and has enjoyed coaching basketball and being a Deacon at his local church. Dennis has been happily married for 28 years to his wife Jeanne and is a proud father of son Michael and daughter Lauren.

Dennis also enjoys spending time on the golf course and with friends, investing, traveling, and visiting the family’s condo in Door County Wisconsin.
