A Boy Who Never Slept
Jane and Oliver Quartz
Price: $14.95
ISBN: 978-0-9816641-0-1 The sky is the limit when dealing with this resilient yet charming party kid! With his imaginative personality, he is always protesting going to bed. He runs wild, plays goofy and uses all excuses and pleas of extenuating circumstances - an urgent need to climb the mountains and explore oceans, or anything else that pushes his bedtime back. When he finally gets “grounded” and is forced to finally go to bed, he feels on top of the world. That’s because he has a fun flying dream where he does see the mountains and oceans … and he grows. The poem appears to be a straightforward description of the funny things that happen around bedtime. However, you don’t really know whether to laugh or cry when you read it. Parents want to bring him back down from the clouds to earth - but his fantasy lingers on in a most exquisite way and takes him back to the clouds. This book is notable in a few ways: all the stanzas were inspired by the authors’ joyful crew of triplets and an older brother, and all the situations in it are true and funny. Odds are, adults will recognize the situations as quickly as you will the kids who inspired them. On the other hand, this book might be a perfect guide for the nutty kids who like to argue and do the opposite of what they have been told. For example, when parents tell them: “Please, put on your PJs,” they will refuse. So the authors figured out that such kids need a kind of “negative” direction. Out of a contradictory attitude, such kids will do the opposite of what they were told, and thus it will result in the correct behavior. |
