Every Child Can Learn

Featured in the Author Spotlight this month, is Willie Walker, President of Project Motivational Math. Twenty three years ago when walker left the banking industry to begin a career in education, he had no idea of the challenges he would face — and conquer — in the classrooms of Miami-Dade County, Florida.

That first year it became apparent that the traditional way of teaching wasn't getting his students excited about learning math. In response, Willie began incorporating memorization and number crunches from a business standpoint into his lesson plans. The result? Walker's students blossomed; his students developed a positive attitude about a subject that ordinarily intimidates, and once past that hurdle, they began to think critically in ways
that spilled over into all other areas of study.

And so, Project Motivational Math was born. For over fifteen years PMM children in grades four through eight have been competing in math competitions, and by using Walker's method, are able to add, subtract, multiply and divide complex problems– producing an accurate answer faster than by using a calculator!  One problem given to a fourth grade boy at the 2002 Mental Math Competition in Miami, Florida, went something like this, "Nine times nine, plus 19, times four, divided by 25, square root, add six, multiply by ounces in a pound, minus 60, plus 44, square root." "Twelve!" shouted the youngster, of Ben Sheppard Elementary school, which won the 2002 championship in the competition, enjoying a sound victory over even North Miami Senior High.

Willie Walker's Motivational Math program and mathematics competitions have proven to be so successful that he was awarded the Miami-Dade County Mathematics Teacher of the Year in 1990. Walker has also developed his own FCAT math supplementary curriculum, and his PMM method has allowed Florida schools to better prepare their students for testing. Schools using the PMM reflected an increase of 10% in students test scores from the previous year at each of the schools his team worked with. Today Mr. Math, as Walker is known, has left a considerable legacy to Florida's children, and his Project Motivational Math is not only enjoying national interest in the U.S. as well as Trinidad, Tobago, and Jamaica, but should be in place in London, England soon as well. A total of over 10,000 students have attended his annual mathematics competitions.

Willie travels all over the United States, most recently in Birmingham, AL, and has traveled from California, Washington, and New York promoting PMM, and the annual Math Competitions have been featured on ABC News in Miami and many newspapers throughout Florida.

Willie Walker's 6th Annual Mental Math &
Jeopardy Competition A Huge Success!
April 14, 2003 – This year's Mental Math Competition, held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Miami, Florida, was sponsored by the Miami-Dade Empowerment Trust and Project Motivational Math. Attended by over 150 students representing 4th through 10th graders from public schools all over the state of Florida, the program lasted from 9 AM until 5 PM with Mental Math contestants competing by grade level for first place prizes of $100 US Savings Bonds, second place prizes of $50 US Savings Bonds, and third through sixth place Mental Math winners receiving trophies and ribbons for their efforts. The first, second and third place Math Jeopardy winners received a trophy and all children participating in the Mental Math and Jeopardy Competitions received an award for their enthusiasm for this worthwhile event.

Mr. Willie Walker conducts pre-competition Mental Math Workshops which, along with the Recipe for Mental Math Manual, helps introduce students to the techniques of Mental Math, improves test-taking skills and prepares them for Mental Math and Jeopardy Competitions.

Walker provides national educational consulting, teacher workshops and classroom modeling, and has created an activities manual and accompanying cassette recordings to facilitate what has become known as The Walker Method.

Mr. Walker is a former accountant who left the business world to become a full-time teacher. His Motivational Math process makes mathematics fun and enjoyable. Children all over are loving it! Even children who didn't necessarily enjoy math are learning to have fun computing math mentally. PMM's curriculum is designed to encourage, excite and motivate students to love and excel in mathematics. This program builds confidence through motivational activities.

MADISON COUNTY, FLORIDA–FEBRUARY 28, 2003
The Project Motivational Math staff has just completed a three-week program at the Madison Central School in Madison, Florida. The Madison program included Classroom Modeling and a Workshop for Teachers to prepare the students and staff for the upcoming FCAT. The program was closed with a Mental Math Competition; students and staff are so excited about the results after only three weeks, they have arranged for Mr. Walker to present his PMM program to the Madison County School Board next week for consideration throughout the district.
