"A more fitting title would be “The Complete Book About John
Wooden.” Everything that anyone could possibly want to know about the
UCLA basketball coach is in this book ... If you’re a Wooden fan, and
there are many in these parts, this book is worth the price."
Arguably
the greatest teacher of all time... If I were you, I’d go out and
take a look at this book. It’s
a very, very good read. A wonderful book.
I really enjoyed The John Wooden Pyramid of Success.
It’s book not only enjoyable for basketball fans but
should be shared with kids. The
first edition of this book quickly sold out and has been out of print
for over a year during which it has been extensively revised and
improved.
John
Wooden, the greatest coach in the history, owner of many
unequaled and unapproachable records, coached the legendary
UCLA basketball teams to 10 national championships between 1963 and
1975. His accomplishments on the court alone make him a fascinating
person. But Coach Wooden is so much more —
a philosopher and creator of the Pyramid of Success. In this first and only authorized biography, self-help
book, and case study, you will be immersed in the wisdom of this
extraordinary man. Wooden has allowed rare access to members of his
family — his brothers, children and grandchildren —
who for the first time take you into his home life, as well as superstar
athletes and nationally known broadcasters. For
those who coach, teach or lead, these are the words and values of the
master: the official Pyramid of Success Lecture, Coach’s favorite
maxims, interviews with him about his life and philosophy. For
those interested in organizations, making teams work, and
goal-achievement, Wooden is the consummate businessman, who during the
last 12 years of doing his job obtained a virtual monopoly on the
national title for collegiate basketball. Learn how he did so as the
master strategist, psychologist, motivator, and example. Husband,
father, friend, educator, poet, athlete, Hoosier, and generally
wonderful person, Coach Wooden’s story and approach to life is an
inspiration to people of all ages. This
is a book about balance and love — what Wooden says are the two
most important ingredients in a person —
and how to nurture those attributes in one’s self and others. John
Wooden, owner of many unequaled and mostly unapproachable records coached the
legendary UCLA basketball teams to 10 national championships between
1963 and 1975. He is
probably the greatest coach in the history of sports and without
question the best in the history of collegiate basketball.
His accomplishments on the court alone make him a fascinating
person. But Coach Wooden is
so much more — a philosopher and creator of the Pyramid of Success, a
guide to achieving success, that is plain-spoken, good, honest common
sense helpful to all.
In
this self-help book, sports biography, and case study, you will be
immersed in the wisdom of this extraordinary man.
Wooden has allowed rare access to members of his family — his
brothers, children and grandchildren —
who for the first time take you into his home life.
You will read numerous first person accounts from those he has
touched throughout his life, hear from nationally known broadcasters,
and travel throughout Indiana meeting those whom he has profoundly
influenced, some since the 1920's. At
last, the complete story is now told. For
those interested in teaching, leadership, organizations, making teams
work, and goal-achievement, Wooden is the consummate businessman, who
during the last 12 years of doing his job obtained a virtual monopoly on
the national title for collegiate basketball.
Learn how he did so as the master strategist, psychologist,
motivator, and example. Husband,
father, friend, educator, poet, athlete, Hoosier, and generally
wonderful person, Coach Wooden’s story and approach to life is an
inspiration to people of all ages. For
the inside story of a true hero in sports and life, this is
indispensable and joyous reading. Herein lies the
non-fiction versions of Goodbye Mr. Chips and It’s a
Wonderful Life, affording the reader a proven perspective on life,
love and the meaning of success. For
anyone seeking to be a better person, achieve peace of mind, live a life
of dignity, and help others
similarly, this is the right book. The
third chapter contains the “guts” of the book: John Wooden’s
speech about the Pyramid of Success, including its substance and
elements, annotated by him, and improved since the first edition. The
fourth chapter is an interview with Coach, directed primarily towards
his motivations in creating the Pyramid and methods for applying its
tenets. Chapter
five contains “Woodenisms” — a collection of his thoughts, and
favorite maxims and poems
— three times the size of the first edition —
that are relevant to the concepts he articulates. The
sixth chapter contains interviews, recollections and comments about
Coach Wooden and the impact of the Pyramid upon those who have come in
contact with him: his family, historians, and those he’s influenced as
we travel through Indiana to Los Angeles, and conclude with his friends
and fans. We are fortunate
to have the inner thoughts of many sports legends who were taught by
Coach Wooden, including the six greatest players he ever coached, Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Willie Naulls, Walt Hazzard, Gail Goodrich
and Sidney Wicks. You will meet Ann Meyers-Drysdale, one of the greatest
female basketball players in history, and certainly the best to play at
UCLA. New to this edition are interviews with H.R. “Bob”
Haldeman, (former Chief of Staff to President Richard Nixon) with whom
Wooden maintained his friendship, even during his incarceration; Jack
Tobin, the co-author of Wooden’s autobiography, They Call Me Coach;
and Andy Hill, a former UCLA player who went on to be a top
entertainment executive and who co-authored with Wooden the recent
best-seller, Be Quick But Don’t Hurry. You will see his
incredible impact and influence, that he is the true to life version of Goodbye
Mr. Chips, James Hilton’s lovely novella of a British school
teacher and his boys who as men acknowledged and carried on his example.
We are lucky to have a rare look into the home life of Coach Wooden, as
his children, grandchildren and brothers let us into their happy world.
Finally,
in the seventh chapter, we have a look at Coach interacting with some of
the stars who played for him.
