About Loose Lead

Over four decades, Adelene Pardo has trained and showed dogs, and taught hundreds of others her proven training and handling techniques. As a licensed all-breed professional handler she was legendary and highly respected. Her students’ many accomplishments in the show ring attest to Mrs. Pardo's success as a teacher.

In this book, she shares her experiences in life, her adventures in dog training and showing, and her well-known expertise in the loose-lead style of conformation handling. The guidance she gives is valuable for any dog owner and her behind-the-scenes stories about life on the dog show circuit will entertain any reader.

Mrs. Pardo is one of only a handful in the United States who teach loose-lead handling and students travel from out of the state to attend her classes, seminars and private lessons. Many of her students are now professional handlers. Using the loose lead style, Mrs. Pardo finished, or showed to championship, hundreds of dogs.

Regarded as one of the best, she is known for her straightforward, honest approach, her ability to cut through to the root of any problem and her quest for excellence. She draws from her 40-plus years of experience in the world of dog showing and her innate knowledge of psychology to teach her students, young and old, how to train and handle their dogs.

Adelene and her husband, Lou Pardo, bred and showed Weimaraners under their kennel name, Weimar Castle, for many years. Now based in Alvin, Texas, she travels the country and abroad as an acclaimed Sporting Group and Best in Show judge and continues to teach students how to handle their dogs "on a nice, loose lead."

About the Author

Nancy Francis brought the same dedication to learning how to train and handle a dog that already had made her an accomplished professional journalist and musician. As a student of Adelene Pardo, she learned the dog show world from the best.

A native of Indiana, Ms. Francis earned a BS in 1973 from Indiana State University with majors in journalism and music theory and composition. She worked as a reporter and photographer for several newspapers in central Indiana. In 1973 she moved to New Orleans, where she studied the cello and became a professional musician.

In 1990 she was married to Don Francis, moved to Houston, and welcomed a Doberman named Venus into her new family. Venus touched her life, and she began a quest for knowledge of the breed that led her to the dog show world. She studied conformation handling with Mrs. Pardo for two years; during that time she enjoyed showing her male Doberman, Texana's Travis v Royalmead ("Mars"). Mars is an active therapy dog.

Ms. Francis is an active member of the Doberman Pinscher Club of Houston and is involved with Houston Area Doberman Rescue.
