In Tom Mielko - An Artist's Journey, Tom Mielko offers over 100 images that reveal his passion for painting. Mielko captures a world that is in change, yet somehow the same, if only in one's memory. His paintings suggest a deeper meaning; the metaphor of wicker slowly unraveling era, perhaps conveying the passage of time. Mielko combines both the fleeting moments of island life and the incredible peace that abounds there. He recorded a Nantucket that few have known.
With over three decades worth of paintings and drawings, Mielko captures the familiar charm of life in the best of both worlds of Nantucket, Massachusetts and Santa Barbara, California.

Tom Mielko was born in Boston, Massachusetts and drew his first awe-inspiring sketches at the age of seven. He studied art in the Museum of Fine Arts School and the Art Institute of Boston. Upon graduating he was one of a few artists asked to teach painting at the Art Institute of Boston. Since graduation in 1968, Tom Mielko has lived his dream of painting for a living.
In 1974 he visited Nantucket and fell in love with the unspoiled island. He has returned every summer since. His gallery, the Mielko gallery, is the oldest gallery on South Wharf.
In 1980 he moved to Santa Barbara, California where he spends his winters and springs. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, Tom Mielko brings the glorious images of shore-life to life in his exquisite, original paintings, serigraphs, giclee prints and graphics. This bi-coastal lifestyle has added expanding dimensions to his romantic realist style of painting. The emotion experienced on viewing his paintings is enhanced by the illusion of it being a personal and private communication with the artist. Such is Mielko's belief and such is his invitation to his wide and growing audience through his manner and style of painting.
Seeing Tom Mielko's art makes believing in nature's magic simple. His artist's passion for living and creating radiate from every detailed piece of Mielko's work.
"When I experience Tom's paintings with their simplicity, unordered orderliness, their sunshine, warmth, and "summer-ness", I experience something profoundly simple and life reaffirming. I become that boy again who spent long days barefoot in the sand, playing in the tide pools and praying summer would never end, and somehow I feel restored. Tom's paintings shine with his love for Eileen and return me to the sweetness and innocence of my first love.
In our hectic world today, Tom Mielko's masterful paintings return me to a time when the world and I seemed very young and I find myself smiling within and feeling very good about everything again!"
- George Anderjack, Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum
"The distinctive aspect of Mielko's paintings are their inter-personal experience. The gentle consciousness of each painting is as if one had come by a path and upon his composition, and the artist had magically placed the love setting onto his canvas unspoiled."
- Stephen Haller, Director of Haller Gallery, New York City, New York
"Whether in Nantucket or Santa Barbara, Tom Mielko is an artist of light. Through his love of the vicissitudes of nature and the human beings in it, he gives us not only these beautiful landscapes, but ourselves in the mystery of them."
- Daphne Rose Kingma, Author
