Summary

It has been said that the only difference between fear and adventure is how much you breathe. For Brian Baco, breathing became both.

A teenager’s feeling of immortality collided with every parent’s nightmare one summer night in 1986 when boys-will-be-boys behavior took a tragic turn. In that proverbial single moment in time, a spinal cord injury changed Brian Baco’s life and the lives of those around him dramatically and forever. So began years of struggle – for answers, emotional support, financial assistance and the simple ability to get through each day.

In the spring of 1993, Gary Hyndman answered the telephone in his study at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Spartanburg, SC. By the time he returned the receiver to its cradle, his life already had shifted in a new direction.

The caller was Barbara Baco whose seven-year struggle to care for her quadriplegic son had exhausted the spirit of volunteerism from friends and family, so she was now appealing to the kindness of strangers.

Over the next six months, a dramatic story began to unfold, one that demanded to be told. It is a story as poignant for its courage as its misery. Now, after the passing of a decade, that story is Breathe. It is the story of a young man’s struggle to live and die with dignity. For Brian Baco, the struggle to live took a backseat to his struggle to live meaningfully.
