About the Author

Karen Steede Terry has been self-employed as an independent software instructor and consultant since 1996. Karen holds teaching certifications from four different GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and GPS (Global Positioning Systems) manufacturers. Previously, she was employed by ESRI®, Inc., and Trimble® Navigation, LTD., the market leading GIS and GPS companies, respectively.

She is a Certified Trimble GPS Trainer, as well as an ESRI Authorized GIS Instructor, and was the first woman to obtain both certifications. She also holds certifications from Leica Geosystems, Inc., and MapInfo Corporation, and is the only person certified by all four manufacturers simultaneously.

GIS is a decision support tool that allows scientists or technicians to overlay map layers for querying data, analysis, mapping trends, and modeling scenarios.

GIS and GPS are used worldwide in thousands of industries, a fact which is reflected in Karen's client base:

  • SBC

  • XTO Energy
  • 3D International
  • Koch Industries Inc.
  • Carter-Burgess, Inc.
