Summary
This book is about hiking, for the benefit of body, mind and soul. The gentle sport and passtime helps to stay reasonably fit, even or particularly in retirement. New discoveries and experiences stimulate the mind. Being away from everyday life for an extended period, in nature's realm, together with spouse and friend soothes the soul.
Over six years, about one month at a time, the Authors, Gudrun and Peter walked the length of the Alps from Nice to Vienna. 1300 miles, 170 days. On the way, they passed through parts of France, Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Surprisingly the hike is easier and shorter than the Appalachian Trail. It leads along an established network of simple and safe trails, from one village to another or to mountain hostels. One sleeps in beds, eats in restaurants or buys food in stores. The backpack weighs only 15 to 25 pounds, easy to carry. At times, it was a little strenuous. One enjoys nature, but also people, history and culture. It is the opportunity to enrich one's life, a chance for a new love story.
Part I of the book tells why, how, when, and where to hike. Europe's Alps are ideal. There are plenty of trails and accommodations, easy to reach and not too high, just right for an active retirement. Or to take some time out. The book gives many practical hints on how to start planning such an excursion.
Part II details the authors' own hike from Nice to Vienna[in more detail]. One finds daily logs, anecdotes, cultural and historic notes, sketch maps and lots of pictures. Yes, there were health problems - and the long distance hiking goal provided the spark to make it through rehab towards a complete recovery. This Part shows that the advice, recommendations, cautions, and comparisons presented in Part I rest on solid personal experience.
Many famous trails in America may be more suited for "the younger crowd", as the book discusses. Perhaps the shortage of easier opportunities over here is a reason that "people just don't hike much". Hopefully, the book helps to bring about some change.
About the Author
Gudrun and Peter Seifert stem from Germany and lived in Switzerland for two years, before coming to the United States in 1964. Perhaps, Central European geography and love for the mountains were bred into their genes.
Gudrun was an English teacher and Peter a mechanical engineer. They are "regular people", not professional guides or movie stars, sports figures, or TV personalities - more the kind one never hears from but should. Both took early partial retirement and started the hike from Nice to Vienna when Peter turned 62. The adventure extended over six years and became one of the greatest experiences of their lives. With the book, Gudrun and Peter like to share their experiences with fellow American retirees and others who have a little extra time to read and to hike.
