Setter Publications ... Where Animals' Health and Welfare Come First

About the Author

John Rowe was born in Owensboro, Kentucky. Today he and his wife Janet live on a farm near Lexington, Kentucky. Along with their adopted dogs and cats, they raise thoroughbred horses. Several Tennessee Walkers live with them in retirement. John felt compelled to publish this second edition of Animal Nutrition after the numerous recent deaths of pets due to a toxin found in corn and wheat gluten from China. In 1997 John’s first edition exposed the pet food industry for their widespread use of the carcinogenic preservative ethoxyquin. He appeared on radio, television, and in newsprint informing the public of this terrible product. Within 18 months of his first publication, this chemical disappeared in pet food. John worked extensively with two major pet food companies over a 10-year period. His dog and cats at Crockett Kennels were used for research and development of these high quality foods. Now he is providing an updated look into this irresponsible industry. This book will assist the reader in knowing exactly what they are purchasing when shopping for pet foods.

Introduction

Twenty-five years of research reveal the truth about animal nutrition, toxic chemicals, non-digestible ingredients, the dangers of feeding high protein products, and the billion dollar myth, organic foods. At last count there were 65 million dog owners, 77 million cat owners, and 4.5 million horse owners in the United States. Six out of every ten people in the U.S. are responsible for an animal’s health and well-being. Animal owners spend more than 40 billion dollars each year on pet food. It appears the least we can do is see these dogs, cats, and horses are fed a wholesome nutritious diet and one that is safe from worry. That’s why we have the FDA, USDA, EPA, and AAFCO- or at least that is what most Americans think. These agencies cater to the businesses first, and animals second, evidenced by the recent deaths of many beloved pets. The time has come for all animal owners to educate themselves and know exactly what they are buying, for themselves and their animals. Do not believe the misleading advertising by both pet food companies and veterinarians- unless they are nutritionists!
