Summary
A Celebration of North American Waterbirds
Traveling to the continent's wild perimeter in search of glorious North American waterbirds, Evans experienced the adventure of a lifetime. Maryland-based photographer, Middleton Evans made 33 trips over a five-year period to complete his "wish list" of alluring species, captivating behaviors, and pristine habitats. A remarkable trip to Florida in 1998 inspired the project with ten days of daily surprises, including a Great Blue Heron grappling a plump muskrat. On a wing and a prayer, Evans dropped his current Baltimore project and dreamed up shots to fill a unique coffee table book celebrating North America's waterbirds at their finest. God poured out blessings time and again, as the veil lifted to reveal profound moments. Highlights include an unusually friendly King Eider, dancing Western Grebes, inquisitive Brown Boobies, a preening Roseate Spoonbill and a charging Reddish Egret. In all, Evans encountered 180 species on trips to thirteen states and Canada, Mexico and the Bahamas. With absolute devotion, awe and love directed toward the birds, they returned it tenfold to the camera. This collection is their gift to you.
About the Author
Middleton Evans, a 1982 graduate of McDonogh School, began his professional career within a week of graduating from Duke University. Returning home with a degree in Economics, but no defined career path, he put his imagination to work. In 1988 a family business was launched to publish Maryland in Focus; a book on Baltimore followed in 1992. Since then most of his time has been devoted to nature photography, beginning with the 1996 release of Maryland's Great Outdoors. In 1998 an extraordinary 10-day Florida bird marathon served as the genesis of Rhapsody in Blue. Maryland Public Television selected Mr. Evans as one of six local photographers to be featured in the 2001 documentary film Images of Maryland: 1900 - 2000, chronicling the state's most distinguished lensmen of the twentieth century. In the meantime Evans as documented an astounding 120 bird species in Baltimore's Patterson Park, for The Miracle Pond, slated for a fall 2008 release.
