Summary

It’s a chilly Thanksgiving, and cat cousins Sunny and Wondrous meet at their family’s country home.  Hoping their felines will become best friends, girl cousins Claire and Ella are dismayed when fur flies instead.  Sunny and Wondrous just aren’t interested in growing a friendship…or are they?

As the chase reaches its peak, the cat cousins realize they haven’t been honest, or kind; and they could be playing instead of fighting!  Hissing and clawing give way (to the joyous astonishment of the girls!) to licking whipped cream from a shared bowl.

Can two cats teach children how to solve their conflicts peacefully?  Authors and sisters Mary Hochenauer & Lois (Suji) Hochenauer-Fox weave a story that says, yes, young readers can learn to communicate from their hearts by choosing love over fear.  Mary and Suji affirm that the rest of us in communities across the world can do so, too!

Canadian illustrator Diane Lucas enhances the timely message of this storybook with spunky, earnest portrayals of characters who feel at times fearful, lonely, selfish, mischievous, generous, loving, happy, and content.  The holiday setting and family warmth draw young readers who, while thrilled by the scrabbling uproar, sigh with satisfaction as Sunny and Wondrous choose friendship.  Part of all book proceeds are contributed to www.savethechildren.org

About the Authors

Authors, teachers and sisters Mary Hochenauer and Lois (Suji) Hochenauer-Fox are aware of our world’s crucial need to solve conflicts non-violently.  Their books and presentations show how we all can speak and listen empathically to each other.

Mary, who earned a Masters degree at CSULA after studying at UC Santa Barbara, has taught students, grades three through eight, and mentored others through to college.  She plays tennis, performs in a chorale and has sailed in Tonga.  Her passion for a fair and just world shows in her community participation.

Suji, a graduate of Oregon State University and UCLA, has taught middle and high school. Studying spiritual themes in the U.S. and India led her to guide thousands of people in their own personal growth and to minister the Home of Truth in Alameda, CA.  Suji’s metaphysical plays, audio tapes, and original songs have made their way to numerous states and countries.

Both women love nature and work to protect Earth’s environment.  They grew up singing, recording and performing on television and stage.  Perhaps, because they’re sisters, they realize the importance of clear, honest and kind communication.  Now, as authors and publishers, they have experienced a very encouraging initial launch of their first book, Sunny and Wondrous, Cat Cousins.  A sequel is ready for publication, and a young adult novel about war and resistance is in the making.
