Summary

In 1990 we heard the wilderness call to us, and, God help us, we answered. Of course, we had no business trying to run a full-time ranch with no experience. People tried to tell us that “The Simple Life” wasn’t so simple, but we weren’t listening. We took one look at Twin Creeks Ranch, and we fell in love. We’d planned to relax on 120 acres of lush beauty, but found we had inherited six cows, two cats, a flock of wild turkeys, and a working cattle ranch. With one stroke of the pen, our dream of a relaxing retreat had vanished.

Question: do you harbor a romantic image of the bucolic country lifestyle? Consider the following:

  • Are you fit?
  • Do you crave adventure?
  • How straight can you shoot?

If you're over 50, or in a job rut, or looking for adventure, (or all of the above), and you yearn for a tranquil country hideaway, please read this cautionary tale first.

About the Author

Mary Lynn Archibald has been a woman entrepreneur since 1984, and a freelance writer since 1995. She currently writes for several national and regional publications. Her subject specialties include Real Estate, Country Living, Gardening, Interior Design, Women in Business, Small-Scale Ranching and Farming, and Health. She and her husband and partner, Carl, with the help of faithful dog, Snazzy, spent 12 years attempting more-or-less vainly to run a cattle ranch in a remote region of Trinity County, California. Mary Lynn is the mother of two grown children and author of two books: Briarhopper: A History, a memoir of one woman’s life from 1913-1945 (available as either a paperback or an e-book), and Accidental Cowgirl: Six Cows, No Horse and No Clue, a lighthearted personal memoir of a greenhorn’s life on a small cattle ranch.
