Summary

Inside The Pinball Machine is an autobiography of a young man from a suburb of Boston who is afflicted with a serious illness at a very young age, survives it, and goes on to accomplish the same goals that his peers do- graduating middle, high school. The main character’s path, though, is much different due to lingering effects of his childhood illness. We see moments of joy and moments of despair that offer the reader an explanation to why the main character acts the way he acts, is the way he is, and thinks the way he does- the author gives his audience a glimpse Inside The Pinball Machine. Inside The Pinball Machine is a literary collage of writings the author has been writing since he was age 13- this includes many poems, short stories, excerpts from memoirs, excerpts from screenplays, and photographs. This unique structure is intended to give the reader the sense that they are in someone’s head- that they are experiencing a beautiful chaos in motion. Now 21, the main character is fiercely independent and wants to share his story in a more authentic manner than the “neat little package with a bow” story portrayed and perceived by most.
