Summary
A radical departure from Professor Albert Boime’s well-known social art history, "The Birth of Abstract Romanticism" examines the paintings of Kamran Khavarani. In this beautiful volume, Boime delves into the beauty, passion and intensity of Khavarani’s work, expressed in layered themes of landscapes, cosmologies, botanical microworlds, and ecstatic visions. Lavished with over 100 images, this book offers a unique view of both an artist and a celebrated art historian. In a letter to his fellow art historians Professor Boime writes: “In the world of painterly art, a new movement is usually introduced by a group of artists working in a similar style and eventually one or more of those artists becoming known as the frontrunner(s) of that style. It is ironic, however, that at this point in time a newcomer to the art community would be bringing mystical messages to the world through a new technique and a unique style. Kamran Khavarani is the only artist creating paintings in the style of Abstract Romanticism.” Exalted by the love poems of the 13th-century Persian poet Jalaluddin Rumi (1207-73), Kamran Khavarani seeks to translate his ecstatic feelings into visual harmonies that celebrate the idea of “Presence,” the loving, creative side of existence. Khavarani brings an entirely fresh perspective to the ecstatic, blissful texts, inspiring contemplation and a realization of a higher selfhood befitting a new consciousness for a new humanity. Rumi’s influence has been steadily growing in our modern world, and Khavarani’s timely work interprets the poet in a visual and universal approach to the human condition. Rumi's poetry flows through Khavarani's paintings, free of preconceived notions and academic influences. It remains to be seen how Khavarani’s painting will influence the history of art. Certainly his work goes against the grain of most international contemporary art and may offer an alternative to it. Professor Boime has taught Social Art History for the past 40 years and is the author of 26 books and over 120 published articles. Among his books is the 6-volume Social History of Modern Art, with over 4,500 pages
