Loretta Halter is a veteran public elementary school teacher with a background in environmental studies and dance. She earned her California teaching credentials at San Jose State University. Inspired by the redwood forests near Santa Cruz, California, and desiring to help preserve them, she wrote A Voice for the Redwoods as a contribution to that effort.

Lacy's Journey is her second environmentally themed work of fiction for school-age children, in which she combines accurate natural science information with entertaining characters, events, and dialogue, to educate young audiences about marine science and environmental issues.
