PREFACE
Dear Parents,
Daily Lifelines will provide you with the tools to teach
your teens about values and techniques that will help
them be successful in life. This book provides an
opportunity for discussing key issues of concern to teens in
a calm manner and while everyone is
receptive. Daily Lifelines was written as a perpetual calendar,
meaning that it can be used over again, and that the reader
can begin at any time of the year. The Index allows
readers to skip ahead to pertinent topics or review back as
many times as they wish.
I wrote this book because I needed a way to introduce my
children to core values and all of the spiritual healing
information I had been learning. It seemed that when I
thought about discussing these things with them, it was when
they had done something I did not like and I was
disciplining them. That was not the right time to teach
them. The inspiration for the book came to me one night
during meditation. Once the ideas began to flow, I could
hardly turn them off.
It is my hope that this daily meditation
guide will provide a vehicle for other parents to teach
their children these concepts
under more receptive conditions. If there is a topic with
which you have a problem, use the opportunity to make
your position known.
Choose a time when everyone is calm, such as before bedtime,
first thing in the morning, in the car while waiting for
someone, and so on. Select the best time, when the child can
think about the lesson and put the thought into practice
that day.
My own children were 8 and 10 when I began to write
this. They have been fully capable of reading and
understanding the lessons and asking questions. You may wish
to read with younger children so they can ask questions as
you read together. Some concepts may be too complex for some
children to understand right now, but they may pick it up
next year. The readings plant the seed. Never underestimate
children. The nice thing about meditation guides is that
they may be read over and over again. I have found that
certain topics pop up just when I am ready to deal with
them!
Each
daily meditation contains a topical lesson, an affirmation,
or a positive statement about what the child will do, and a
prayer. Every lesson is interactive in that the child is
encouraged to respond to the lesson topic in actions or
words.
I wrestled with what to call God. Some people call God
Yahweh, Abba, Higher Power, Divine Intelligence, Creator,
Mother-Father God, and so on. In writing these lessons, I
purposely tried not to assign gender to God. In some cases I
used "he" and in other "she." I believe
that we can all agree that God is more than we can imagine,
and therefore trying to define God is fruitless. I used
"God" and will leave it up to you to call God what
you wish. I do not think that God cares.
Many people are experiencing a spiritual renewal and want to
share this with their children. I hope this book will help
you and your children.

"As a minister I'm always
looking for ways to reach our youth and this guide
is an excellent tool. Using the scriptures to affirm
the realities of life is a masterful stroke in
character building, self-appraisal and building a
lasting relationship not only with one another but
also with God.
The Bible asks a searching question:
"How can you say that you love God whom you
have never seen and hate your brother who you see
everyday?"
Rev. Robert L. Barney Sr.

"This
book is perfect for preteens and teens. Also for
parents of teenagers. The prayers are short, unique
and inspiring. It is a daily 'shot in the arm' to
remind kids to turn to God in their daily
lives."

"There
is a real need for this type of a directed journal
for middle school kids. I really appreciate the
variety of topics. It seems as if every topic
imaginable is confronted at some point in the 365
days. I
grew to crave the action statement. It spelled out
for the youth what they needed to do to get
results."

"Great
for parents. It puts you back in the mind of your
children and how they think. What better way is
there to help them through a situation than to feel
and think what they are thinking and feeling."
