A Novel By Jonathan Miller
Darkly comic legal thriller
ISBN #: 0-9673920-3-9
"Jonathan Miller's
debut work, Rattlesnake Lawyer captivated me from the outset
for two good reasons, the unconventional title and the ability of the
author to tell a serious tale in a light comic manner, while at the
same time keeping intact the aspect of somberness...One thing for
sure, Jonathan Miller is a fine attorney, and his expertise in law and
courtroom procedure is really highlighted in Rattlesnake Lawyer.
The whole novel reads like a well prepared brief...as a debut
Rattlesnake Lawyer is fantastic."
"A lawyer who writes in something other than legalese, we
should all thank him for that."
"Jonathan Miller, a
New Mexico lawyer and a failed stand-up comic, also dabbles in
Hollywood screenwriting. This unique background shows in his
writing - both his insiders knowledge of the rough side of life in the
detention centers of the southwest, and his deft hand at spewing out a
rattle of witty and colorful dialogue between peculiar characters."
"Unlike many busy young lawyers,
Jonathan Miller always answers his telephone calls. He never
knows whether the next call is going to be from Hollywood or from
prison. Miller, an Albuquerque lawyer who's also a writer, just
might be the next John Grisham."
"Watch for Rattlesnakes" reads
the sign at the first rest stop within New Mexico's "Fighting 14th"
district. Young attorney Dan Shepard has been fired by his
mother's prestigious Washington law firm, and now must make his home
among the rattlesnakes. A failed stand-up comic forced into law
to pay the bills, Dan finds nothing amusing about his first case.
His client, Jesus Villalobos, faces a murder charge, but nothing is
what it seems...The State seems a little too eager to pin the charge
on Jesus. Along the way, it is hard to tell who is the lawyer
and who is the client.
There is no escape for Dan in a small
town where everybody knows what's going on except him. Dan faces
a unique dilemma when he constantly encounters his client's family and
friends as they cut his hair and serve his food - how much should he
tip them?
Rattlesnake Lawyer is a darkly comic
tale of a young lawyer's coming of age in the outback of America, how
he learns to overcome his own fears and prejudices. Dan can't
even pronounce his client's name when he first arrives, and leaves the
door to the jail open on his way out. But through his mentor,
Pete Baca, who has a few secrets of his own, Dan learns how to
practice law in a land of outlaws.
Dan also learns about love from his
client. Jesus wants to marry his one time sweetheart Anna Maria, a
love that transcends prison bars and perhaps time itself.
Desperately lonely as the story begins, Dan meets the woman of his
dreams, but is she using him to get to his client?
Rattlesnake Lawyer ends with an
unforgettable trial and an even more unforgettable wedding.
Jonathan Miller has practiced law all
over New Mexico, primarily representing juveniles accused of crimes.
Several of his clients could be considered high profile. He
currently is in private practice in Albuquerque, where he writes and
stays active working for legal services providers helping out the
poor. |
