This is not the book I wanted to write."
Author and attorney Jonathan Miller spoke those words into a large tape
recorder as he headed toward a job at the D.A's office in Roswell, New
Mexico. He vowed to get a book out of his experiences. Ten long years
later, "Rattlesnake Lawyer" was published and Miller was writing in
Hollywood. Life was great!
Unfortunately, within months he was an
unemployed writer末and an unemployed lawyer末back in New Mexico with
boxes of unsold books lying in a storage closet. He felt as if his
"writer's license" had been revoked. But then the fun began.
As his only option between eating and
starving, Miller arranged his own book tour and made his "Rattlesnake
Lawyer" novel into a regional cult classic. On his tour末which ran from
Houston to Hiroshima末Miller encountered such luminaries as "Mr. Spock,"
"Harry Potter," and a mysterious woman known only as the Mexican Geisha.
Through faith and fortitude, Miller learned the value of writing, and
why all true authors must go to Amarillo in August. Miller quickly sold
all the boxes of books and his publisher has reprinted thousands more.
Perhaps Amarillo in August末a fun, wacky
book of his experiences on that fated book tour末was the book Miller
wanted to write after all. If you are just beginning to write (or sell)
that great novel末especially if you are giving up a career to do
so末Amarillo in August is an absolute must read.
Jonathan Miller has practiced law all
over New Mexico, primarily representing juveniles accused of crimes.
Several of his clients could be considered high profile. He
currently is in private practice in Albuquerque, where he writes and
stays active working for legal services providers helping out the
poor. |
