Think you can't tell a book by its cover?

Think again. Thirteen-year-old Emily hated the bug book with its gigantic millipede under the title. She hated it so much that just looking at it gave her the creeps. It appeared so gross, so life-like it was unnerving. She wanted absolutely nothing to do with it - ever!

So, of course her mischievous older brother, Bud, decided to hide it under her pillow. That's what brothers are for, after all.

Bud knew Em had to write her school spring report about the crawly, creepy, and stinky bugs, which she so vehemently detested. He figured it would be his brotherly duty to have his sister wake up nestled above the book - jam-packed with millions of disgusting bugs-all night.

What Bud didn't realize, however was that those pages upon pages of bugs looked incredibly realistic for a very good - and terrifying -- reason.

Truth is this book had legs.and wings.and teeth.and bulging eyes.and flitting antenna and slime...and the power to attack children from inside -- and out. And thanks to Bud's antics, unlucky Emily discovered it firsthand.

Bugs in a solid book? Whoa - hold your horseflies - but it's true. And it gets worse. If Emily, Bud, and their teen friends don't uncover what the book really is, and how to untangle themselves from the bizarre bug book world, they could end up completely buggy. Or dead.

Karen Laven was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, but spent the first six years of her life in Santa Monica, California.  Grateful that her dreams of being a writer didn't plummet down a rocky mountainside, Karen and her family returned to their Minnesota roots in the late sixties, which is where she finished her schooling and married her husband, Doug. She worked as the feature writer for The Drummer Newspaper (in Wright County, MN) for seven years.  She has also had her articles, poetry, essays and other fiction and nonfiction works published in a variety of magazines across the country. The Laven's recently moved to Kentucky with their two children (Jacob, 15 & Lucas, 10). Kentuckians have been very warm to these uninitiated northern folk (ya, you betcha!) and although the Laven's miss Minnesota and its people greatly, they do not miss the head-to-toe freezing winters, y'all.
