Summary

Orwellian forces plot to take over America......

THE TIME IS IN THE FUTURE.   The great Mid Eastern War, started by the invasion of Iraq in 2003, has finally ended in a humiliating debacle for the United States.  The world economy is in deep economic crisis, worse than the great depression of the 1930’s.  China, Japan, and Saudi Arabia have panicked and stopped loaning money to cover U.S. deficits.  The U.S. role of policeman, controller, and stabilizer of the world has finally strained its immense wealth to the breaking point.

China’s banking system has collapsed and its repressive communism has returned in full vengeance.  Russia has regressed from its early promise after the end of the cold war into a dictatorship of oligarchic gangsters.  The Islamic Middle East is now a theocratic dictatorship under the name The United Islamic Republic.  Israel hangs on by a nuclear cord.

The long-predicted consequence of global warming has finally begun to strike in the form of worldwide water shortages and tens of millions of people flooded out of their homes each year.

Millions of citizens are marching on Washington D.C. demanding jobs, pensions, and welfare checks.  Deficits and inflation continue to soar.  All mechanisms of the Federal Reserve Bank to save the economy are failing.  The polls are sinking like a stone for President Helen Carpenter, the unlucky woman who had inherited the wreckage left by the outgoing president.

A newly formed third party is desperately seeking a dark horse candidate and is about to find one: A multi-billionaire computer nerd named Truman Trout, who has built a computer that is superhumanly intelligent, and will revolutionize the world.

Trout has a big problem.  Years earlier he was investigated by the FBI for the murder of his mistress while cruising on his super yacht in the Mediterranean Sea.  The case has now gone cold, but Trout’s reputation has been stained.  He hires the San Diego crime consulting firm of Quickly & Burton to clear his name so he can run for the presidency, but their investigation leads to something far more sinister—a conspiracy to overthrow the U.S. Government.

Could the United States become a fascist dictatorship like Hitler’s Nazi Germany?  Or worse yet, could George Orwell’s 1984 finally become a reality?  What are the threats from advanced computer technology, bio technology, and genetic science in our constitutional democracy?

The novel examines these prospects in two stories that converge as Alexander Quickly and Julius Burton, with their investigator Zelda Rivers, probe into mysteries to find if Trout is in fact innocent, and to try to unravel the conspiracy.

This story takes us to the island of Sardinia, Italy, to Washington, D.C., and the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, as Julius and Zelda go after the truth in the glamorous world of super yachts and private jets.

The author’s research on the factual base of this novel brings fresh insights about the fragility of democratic governments, the profound danger when computers become superior to humans, and the possibilities of genetic manipulation of the human mind for evil purposes.

About the Author

Jack Cade is a pseudonym. The real Jack Cade was the leader in late medieval Europe of the 1450 Kent rebellion that took place in the time of King Henry VI in England. Some sources suggest Cade was of Irish origin, and he was alleged to have murdered a woman in 1449. The revolt against King Henry was for unfair taxes, corruption, and damaging effect of the loss of France. For his role in the Kent rebellion, Cade was killed, after which his body was taken to London and quartered for display in different cities; his head ended up on a pike on London Bridge.
