Summary:

Rails of Dreams was my first book in 2003; Ghost Rails VII The Short Line , my 11th book, will be published in 2010.  Rails has it all for the historian, the streetcar enthusiasts, and railroad buff: a complex railroad genealogy covering Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio from Youngstown to the Ohio River, Columbia and Mahoning Counties in Ohio and Beaver and Lawrence in Pa.  It details the first history of the Youngstown and Southern Railroad, the legendary Pittsburgh Lisbon and Western, the Pittsburgh Coal Company’s private railroad: the Smiths Ferry Coal Railroad from the Ohio River across the massive Fredericktown trestle to the Champion coal washer at Negley.  Once owned by the Wheeling and Lake Erie, the Y&S fought PRR and P&LE ownership only to become part of the P&LE. This book has it all: interurbans, the extensive Y&S streetcars system, the last in Ohio and in beaver County, Pa. as well, the Mack railbus, electric locomotives, steam and diesel, Ohio River barge and railroad operations to Republic Steel in Youngstown, P&LE and PRR ownership, the Montour railroad north of the Ohio River, and America’s oldest railroad station in Darlington, Pa..

Negley watertower, 1978

The book has been long sold out but a bit like the old Youngstown and Southern, today the Youngstown and South Eastern, it is still operating, America’s oldest operating short line.
