Eyelid Puffiness And Bagginess Can Be People in their early thirties or younger will start to see signs of aging around their eyes. The upper eyelid skin will develop fine wrinkles and there may be more puffiness in that area than in the past because of fat bulging. People try to pass this off as a result of not getting a good night’s sleep but even when they have slept well, the puffiness remains. Excess upper eyelid skin excess can droop onto and over the upper eyelashes, obstructing vision in some cases. These signs of aging can be improved. The lower eyelids tend to develop fine wrinkles that later can lead to much deeper ones. Puffiness/bagginess of the lower eyelids due to fat bulging can also occur. The lower eyelid can stretch and weaken, sometimes pulling down and away from the eyes. The lower eyelids can even assume a sunken appearance that wasn’t apparent before. Signs of aging of the upper and lower eyelids are easy to see. They make a person look much older than they actually are. People in their forties with puffy and baggy eyelids may appear to be in their late fifties or sixties. People in their sixties with eyelid bagginess will look even older. The appearance of the eyelids can be significantly improved. An eyelid lift, also know as blepharoplasty, is performed and the excess skin, muscle and fat are removed. For the upper eyelids the skin incision is placed into the natural upper eyelid skin fold, making the incisions as well concealed as possible. In addition, forehead skin sagging can cause the eyebrows to droop onto the upper eyelids, aging their appearance. To improve this condition, the eyebrows are lifted into a more youthful position. This is called a forehead lift and it can be done at the same time the upper eyelid procedure is done. For the lower eyelids the skin incision is made immediately below each lower eyelash margin. Skin, muscle and fat excess are removed through this incision. If the lower eyelid needs to be tightened, that can be done at the same time. To avoid a lower eyelid skin incision, an incision can be made on the inside of the lower eyelid. This is called a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. Fat excess can be removed through this incision. At the same time a transconjunctival blepharoplasty is done, the lower eyelid skin surface can undergo laser skin resurfacing to improve the fine wrinkles. Stitches are placed to close the skin incision and are removed within three to five days. Swelling of the eyelids at this time is normal and usually maximizes by one to three days. Bruising can also be seen around the area but is short lasting. Soon after the stitches are removed, a cover makeup can soon be applied to conceal any bruising. The upper eyelids will appear to be more youthful. They’ll have a more open look because the bulging skin, fat and muscle excesses will have been removed. Previous bagginess of the lower eyelids will be lessened by the procedure. When you look in the mirror your attention will not be drawn to your puffy eyelids anymore because they will be improved. The eyelid lift is a very rewarding and common procedure for both men and women. As with any procedure, complications to watch for include but are not limited to infection, bleeding and scarring. The procedure can be done under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation, where an I.V. is started and medicine is given to make you sleepy, or under general anesthesia. Since the incisions are placed in such naturally concealed area, it may be hard to find them later on. When you look at someone who has had the procedure, you’ll only know they look better, more youthful and rested. |
