Bread Crumb
A Greek's Odyssey

Statement by Earl Hamner
(John Boy Walton)

This book is not the standard book you will find in bookstores today. It is an inspiring book and one that should be especially welcome today when patriotism is on the rise and we are taking a new look at our national character.

The central core is the familiar story of an immigrant…whose life is worthy of extensive documentation. It addition to his virtues the period of his life had large scope…high drama. The dialogue is so good!

Just a note about the writing. It is clear and vivid and honest, rich in detail and character description.

Lastly, I would like to have known "Bread Crumb". I would like to have gone fishing with him.

Preface

"...Parents: prepare your children to be the future heroes that God and circumstance may demand they become. Nurture them. Instill in them the spirit that will keep them strong in times of hardship and will keep them humble in times of blessing. Children : learn your lessons well. Stay together and remember that if the clouds of time grow dark, you must keep your faith and remain strong, for eventually those clouds will give way to the sun again.

Please remember you are all guardians of your beliefs and your human rights. God bless you all and God bless America. Go in peace with God forever."

-Archbishop of the Americas Iakovos, December 1, 2000

Excerpt (Page 1...)

Of prehistoric days,
And then I measure them in lots
And lots of different ways.
And then (like you) I start to write.
My words are twice as long
As yours, and far more erudite.
They prove my colleagues wrong!

-Agatha Christie
Come Tell Me How You Live, 1944

The late winter of 1994 had been unseasonably harsh for metropolitan Washington, D.C. Sheets of ice had covered roads and toppled power lines for weeks. The thaw finally came by mid-March, and now, on this particular Sunday, just days later, the appearance of my little friends had banished winter's drear and the pageantry of spring had begun.
