BCA:
Business Case Analysis

James W. Brannock

A Note from the Author:

This is the book that I looked everywhere for on my first real job as a new second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, many years ago. My assignments continually involved situations where last minute end-of-year funds were available for many of the needed programs, but where justification for budget support never seemed strong enough. At first, when unable to make the winning case, I wrote most instances off, assuming ‘somebody up there’ really knows better.

In the years that followed, while serving in nearly all echelons of management in some very larger organizations, I became involved in increasingly more complex situations. As my decision responsibilities grew in importance, I realized that needed decision support was often even more obscure ‘up the organization’. Eventually I realized that the ‘somebody up there’ (who should really know better) was me, and that I often did not have a clue of what was really needed.

I dug in. I began to build on my academic knowledge about business and economic analysis. I continually took notes about ‘real world’ situations, from local operations to strategic planning. Eventually, many of the concepts, tools and techniques became clear. The culmination of this knowledge quest is presented in this book—under the general title of Business Case Analysis.

This book is the general how-to reference that I have needed so many times, and in so many business decision situations. These decision support tools include both human (social) and technical (mathematical) applications, both needed for good decisions. I hope concepts and techniques will be as fun for you to use as they were for me to learn.
