Chapter One
The Art of Writing a Novel

What, you say, is a WOW Factor? It is what the Author injects into a story that will make the Reader say "WOW" over and over again! In a WOW novel, when the Reader finished, he/she will sit back and savor a real experience, one that stirred the emotions and will never be forgotten. This book is about how to write a WOW novel and the experience of writing one! You don;t need an outline to START! There is no need for a formula or step by step approach!

Writing a novel is "freeform art".

The Seminal Idea

This is the "seed" that is planted to grow into a novel. It is "in your head", almost to the point of obsession. You wish you had the time and knowledge to get it out of your head and onto paper.

This "seed" seems a crazy idea at first ... but now that
I've had time to think about it, it might work!

The seminal idea may revolve around people you know. How, you ask, will I ever be able to write about "that" without embarrassing myself and other people? Write it down anyway!

Perhaps you don't have a good seminal idea. You want to write a novel, so you'll need to search around for an idea that would make a great novel.

The Title

It may be crystal clear to you what the title of your novel should be, based on your seminal idea. Or, the title may not be clear. Pick out a title and use it until the title you really want becomes clear. Your writing will eventually suggest to you the best title.

Choosing a title is very important. You want a title that is descriptive of the novel, focusing on the characters, the plot, the scenario or all of these. It should be as short as you can make it. It should have a high "WOW" factor, that is, it should be something that will grab a potential Reader's eye if seen on a book shelf.

Paint and Canvas

What do I use to create a novel? If writing a novel is freeform art, what paint and canvas do I use? I will provide and describe six primary concepts that you will use to paint your picture ... write your novel. They are:

  1. The Tools of the Author
  2. The WOW Factor
  3. The Story Events
  4. The Creative Principles
  5. The Rough-Through
  6. The Creative Reviews

We are going to have an adventure together ... exploring how to write a novel ... while writing on! We'll use the paint and canvas noted above to write the "Rough-Through" of a novel called "The Unknown Horizon"!
